Round Island Another fantastic island and wonderful sight from a catamaran, Round Island can be found approximately km north of Mauritius. This small islet holds a wealth of endemic flora and fauna (relative to its size that is) and has actually been declared a nature reserve by the Mauritius Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Round Island ( ha) holds the only populations of several reptiles and plants that formerly occurred on Mauritius. Eradication of introduced goats (Capra hircus) by and rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) by was predicted to allow increases in abundance of threatened species. The island was created by a gigantic volcanic eruption some million years ago. The wildlife in Mauritius, though not as diverse as other parts of the world, possesses unique and interesting animal species which you might not find elsewhere.
